New Medicine Service (NMS) at Saood Pharmacy
Starting a new medication can be a period of adjustment. You may have questions about how it works, potential side effects, or how it fits into your daily routine.
At Saood Pharmacy, our New Medicine Service (NMS) is a free, evidence-based NHS program designed to provide you with dedicated clinical support during the first few weeks of a new treatment. We are here to ensure you get the maximum benefit from your medicine safely and effectively.
How the Service Works
The NMS follows a structured, three-stage process to monitor your progress and address any concerns early on:
- Patient Engagement: When you are first prescribed a qualifying medication, our pharmacist will have a brief chat with you to explain the service and provide initial advice on how to take your new medicine.
- Intervention (7–14 days later): We will schedule a follow-up (in our private consultation room or over the phone) to discuss how you are feeling, check for side effects, and tackle any challenges you’ve faced.
- Follow-up (14–21 days after the intervention): A final review to ensure you are comfortable with your treatment and that it has become a manageable part of your healthy routine.
Who is Eligible?
Following the latest NHS guidelines, the NMS is available to patients starting a new medicine for several long-term conditions, including:
| Therapeutic Areas Covered | Condition |
| Respiratory | Asthma and COPD |
| Cardiovascular | Hypertension, High Cholesterol, Stroke/TIA, Heart Failure, or CAD |
| Diabetes | Type 2 Diabetes |
| Blood Health | Anticoagulant or Antiplatelet therapy |
| Neurological | Epilepsy and Parkinson’s Disease |
| Others | Depression, Glaucoma, Gout, Osteoporosis, Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), and Urinary Incontinence, |
Why Participate in the NMS?
- Reduced Side Effects: By identifying issues early, we can often suggest ways to minimise or manage side effects.
- Improved Health: Patients who complete the NMS are statistically more likely to take their medication correctly, leading to better long-term health outcomes.
- Direct Access: You get one-on-one time with a clinical expert without needing an appointment with your GP.
- Complete Confidentiality: Your discussions take place in our private consultation suite.
